Geoengineering refers to a set of emerging technologies that could manipulate the environment and partially offset some of the impacts of climate change. Solar geoengineering in particular could not be a replacement for reducing emissions (mitigation) or coping with a changing climate (adaptation); yet, it could supplement these efforts. Geoengineering is the deliberate large-scale intervention in the Earth’s natural systems to counteract climate change. There is wide range of proposed geoengineering techniques. Generally, these can be grouped into two categories: solar radiation management (SRM), and carbon dioxide removal (CDR).

The two main approaches being researched are stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI) and marine cloud brightening (MCB). Solar radiation management (SRM), or solar geoengineering, is a type of climate engineering in which sunlight (solar radiation) is reflected back to space to limit or reverse global warming.

In this article, we review the current state of the literature on the ethical, legal, economic, and social science aspects of this emerging area.

2018-01-01 · Solar geoengineering (also called albedo modification or solar radiation management) is defined as the large-scale manipulation of the albedo, or reflectivity, of the planet to compensate for the greenhouse effect. 1 A small but growing literature examines the economics of solar geoengineering.

Called solar radiation modification (SRM), this strategy is a type of geoengineering that involves scattering particles into the sky to reflect sunlight back out into space so it can't warm the Solar geoengineering has long been a subject of intense debate among scientists and policymakers, often seen as a desperate, potentially dangerous measure that could have unintended consequences A trailblazing experiment to launch a balloon into the stratosphere from Sweden for a solar geoengineering test has been suspended and delayed until 2022 to give more time for engagement with the In the run-up to Earth Day, Rolling Stone held a series of three debates, each focusing on a different contentious climate solution: solar geoengineering, carbon removal, and how quickly we can Solar geoengineering is a dangerous set of proposals that could have disastrous effects, particularly in the Global South. And geoengineering will do nothing to address the structural causes of climate change; that’s why it has the enthusiastic backing of the fossil fuel industry. Scientists agree that cutting global greenhouse emissions as soon as possible will be key to tackling global warming. But, with global emissions still on the rise, some researchers are now calling for more research into measures that could be taken alongside emissions cuts, including – controversially – the use of “solar geoengineering” technologies.

Solar radiation management (SRM), or solar geoengineering, is a type of climate engineering in which sunlight (solar radiation) is reflected back to space to limit or reverse global warming. Proposed methods include increasing the planetary albedo (reflectivity), for example with stratospheric sulfate aerosol injection .

Det har på senare år kommit att  SRM är en typ av geoengineering.

‘Solar geoengineering’ (sometimes called ‘solar radiation management’, ‘solar radiation modification’ or ‘solar climate engineering’) is a set of proposed technologies to intentionally alter the Earth's radiative balance through means other than changing atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gases [ 5, 6 ].

Halving warming with solar geoengineering offsets most of this, the authors say, reducing the increase to 2.4%. Winners and losers?
